Lighthouse State Park Camping

There are several options for camping in the park. If you’re visiting between May and October, you can reserve an electric drive-in site. Most of them offer 70-foot-long parking pads. Alternatively, you can opt for a cart-in site. Shower buildings and vault toilets are located throughout the park. Keep in mind that the park does not have a water fill station.

Burlington Bay Campground

Located just 20 minutes from Lighthouse Park, Burlington Bay Campground is an ideal selection for camping on the shores of Lake Superior. Sixty-six sites offer water and electric hookups, while 36 offer sewer hookups. Do note that only four people are allowed on each site. 

Black Beach Municipal Campground

What does Black Beach Municipal Campground offer? The list includes raging waterfalls, a scenic beach, a 9-hole golf course, and multi-use trails. Whether you reserve an electric-only site or one that has water hookups, you’ll be paying at least $30 a night. Additional fees apply. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, fire rings, potable water stations, and showers. 

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park Yearly Weather

Minnesota is no stranger to frigid winter conditions that leave you longing for sunny skies and sandy beaches. Since the park is located near the town of Two Harbors, you’ll want to stay up-to-date on its surrounding climate. Here is what you can expect each season at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.   

Winter

A winter visit is not for the faint of heart. In January, the average high reaches 22 degrees Fahrenheit before dropping to an overnight low of 3.6 degrees. Expect anywhere between 14.3 and 8.5 inches of snow from January to March. On the bright side, there’s plenty to do to keep yourself occupied during this season. You can partake in snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and winter hiking.

Spring

For the most part, spring remains a cold period. Average highs range between 36 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Overnight lows can drop below freezing temperatures. The good news is that spring is the driest season, which means little to no rain. If you come during this season, keep an eye out for migrating birds along the shore of Lake Superior. They make for quite a sight!

Summer

Summer is prime time for visiting Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. From June to August, you can expect average highs between the upper 60s and low 70s. Overnight lows usually drop just below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re in the mood for a pleasant afternoon, take a cool, refreshing dip at Pebble Beach. Visitors can also bring their kayaks if they wish. 

Fall

For many travelers, fall colors are a sight to behold. If you enjoy the fall foliage, then plan for an autumn visit. By October, the average high reaches 53 degrees Fahrenheit. By November, you can expect the temperature to drop to an average of 37.8 degrees, making late fall feel like early winter. Be advised that autumn is also the rainiest season.

• Multi-use trails: It wouldn’t be a state park if we didn’t include trails suitable for hiking, jogging, and biking. We recommend the Gitchi-Gami Trail as the starting point, which covers most of the park. 
• Pebble Beach: Cool off during the summer by taking a dip at Pebble Beach. The surrounding views are enough to keep visitors intrigued for hours!
• Winter activities: The real adventure begins once temperatures drop. You can snowshoe on the snow-covered trails or hike over to frozen waterfalls.
